Hardscape & Outdoor Living in Charlotte, NC

Paver patios, retaining walls, walkways, fire pits, and outdoor living spaces.

Service Overview

Hardscape & Outdoor Living tailored to your property

A well-built hardscape turns an unused backyard into the most-used room in the house. We design and install paver patios, segmental retaining walls, natural stone walkways, fire pits, seat walls, and full outdoor living spaces for residential and commercial properties across Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Fort Mill, and Tega Cay.

Hardscape that lasts in the Piedmont starts under the surface — proper excavation, compacted aggregate base, polymeric jointing sand, and engineered drainage. Skip those steps and pavers shift, walls bulge, and joints wash out after the first few Carolina thunderstorms. We don't skip steps, and our work shows it five and ten years down the road.

What we do

A snapshot of the work we commonly take on under this service. Your scope is built from what your property actually needs — pick and choose, or let us recommend.

Who it's for

Homeowners building an outdoor living space

Paver patios, fire pits, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens designed as one cohesive space — not bolted-on additions. We work with your existing landscape and architecture so the finished area looks intentional.

Properties with grade or wall needs

Sloped lots in Lake Norman, Tega Cay, and Ballantyne often need retaining walls to create usable yard space. We design and install segmental block walls up to engineered heights, with proper drainage and geogrid reinforcement.

Commercial & HOA hardscape

Entrance walls, courtyard pavers, ADA-compliant walkways, and amenity-area patios for offices, retail, and community spaces across the Charlotte metro.

How we scope your project

Every property is different, so every quote is too. Here's the general path we take from first call to finished work — adjusted to fit the size, complexity, and goals of your specific project.

  1. 1. Design consultation

We meet on site, talk through how you want to use the space, take measurements, and sketch a layout. For larger projects we provide a scaled design and 3D renderings before any work begins.

  2. 2. Material selection

Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Pavestone, natural flagstone — we walk you through paver styles, wall blocks, and color blends so the finished hardscape complements your home.

  3. 3. Excavation & base prep

We excavate to depth, install and compact a 6–8 inch crushed-stone base in lifts, and set proper slope for drainage away from structures.

  4. 4. Install & finish

Pavers laid tight to pattern, edge restraints spiked in, polymeric sand swept and activated. Walls are stepped into the slope with drainage stone and outlet pipe behind every course.

Why Piedmont Landscape & Irrigation

  • ICPI-trained installers — pavers laid to industry standards, not eyeballed.
  • 6–8 inch compacted aggregate base on every patio, not the 2-inch shortcut.
  • Polymeric sand joints — locks pavers in place, resists weeds and ants.
  • Retaining walls over 4 feet engineered with geogrid and inspected drainage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Charlotte?+

Most residential paver patios run $22–$38 per square foot installed, depending on paver style, pattern complexity, and site access. Premium pavers, curves, fire pits, and seat walls add to the cost. We give flat written quotes after measuring.

How long does a hardscape project take?+

A standard 400–600 sq ft paver patio typically takes 5–10 working days from excavation to final cleanup. Larger outdoor living builds with walls, fire pits, and pergolas can run 2–4 weeks. Weather can affect the schedule.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?+

In most Charlotte-area municipalities, retaining walls over 4 feet (measured from the bottom of the footing) require a permit and engineered drawings. We handle the permit and engineering as part of the job when needed.

Will pavers shift or sink over time?+

Not when they're installed correctly. The two reasons pavers fail are inadequate base and poor drainage — both of which we engineer for from day one. Our hardscapes carry a workmanship warranty and most pavers come with a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
