Walkways & Outdoor Steps in Charlotte, NC

Paver, flagstone, and natural stone walkways and step installations that transform property entries.

Service Overview

Walkways & Steps tailored to your property

The walk to your front door is the first thing every guest, neighbor, and prospective buyer sees. A cracked concrete walkway, sagging stepping stones, or a lopsided front step quietly undermines everything else about the property. A properly built paver, flagstone, or natural stone walkway with safe, code-compliant steps does the opposite — it tells everyone arriving that the home is well-cared-for from the moment they pull up.

We design and build front and back walkways, garden paths, outdoor staircases, and patio landings across the Charlotte metro. Concrete pavers, clay brick, natural flagstone, bluestone, and irregular fieldstone — installed on engineered base with proper drainage and joint material for decades of use.

Who it's for

Homeowners with cracked concrete walks

Pour-in-place concrete walks crack, settle, and stain. Replacing them with pavers or flagstone is one of the highest-ROI exterior upgrades you can make — and it's permanent.

Properties with sloped front yards

If you're climbing an awkward grade to your front door, a properly designed staircase with code-correct rise/run makes the entry safer and dramatically more attractive.

Backyards needing patio-to-yard transitions

Steps from a deck or patio down to lawn level — built right with proper landings, lighting, and drainage — turn a clunky transition into a finished design element.

How we scope your project

Every property is different, so every quote is too. Here's the general path we take from first call to finished work — adjusted to fit the size, complexity, and goals of your specific project.

  1. 1. Design & layout

We walk the path, talk through material options, and lay out the walk and steps on the ground with paint and stakes so you can see the actual path before any work begins.

  2. 2. Excavation & base

Walkways excavated to 6–8 inches, geotextile fabric installed, aggregate base compacted in lifts, and bedding sand screeded — the same engineered base we use under patios.

  3. 3. Step construction

Steps built with consistent rise (typically 6.5–7 inches) and run (12+ inches) per code. Solid foundations under landings — no soft spots that settle later.

  4. 4. Paver install, joints & cleanup

Material laid in pattern, custom cuts at edges, polymeric joint sand swept and activated. Site cleaned and ready to use the day we finish.

Why Piedmont Landscape & Irrigation

  • Engineered base under every walkway — same standard as patios, not the shortcut work most concrete contractors do.
  • Steps built to consistent rise/run — no surprise tall step that becomes a tripping hazard.
  • Polymeric joint sand on paver walks — joints stay clean and weed-free.
  • Lighting can be integrated during install — much cleaner than retrofitting later.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver walkway cost in Charlotte?+

Paver walkways typically run $25–$45 per square foot installed depending on material and pattern. Natural flagstone runs higher. Most front walks fall between $3,500 and $8,500. Steps are quoted per riser/landing.

Pavers, flagstone, or bluestone — what's the difference?+

Concrete pavers offer the widest design range and lowest cost. Natural flagstone (irregular shapes) gives an organic look. Bluestone is dimensional natural stone with a high-end formal look. We'll show you samples of each on site.

Are there code requirements for outdoor steps?+

Yes — Charlotte and most municipalities have rise/run requirements and handrail requirements for steps with multiple risers. We build to code and coordinate handrails with metal fabricators when needed.

Can you replace my old concrete walk in stages?+

Yes — front walk and back walk can be done as separate phases if budget requires. We typically recommend doing the visible front walk first for the highest ROI.

Finish the front entry. Or fix the back transition.
