Stump Grinding in Charlotte, NC

Below-grade stump grinding that gives you back usable lawn and bed space.

Service Overview

Stump Grinding tailored to your property

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard, a mower-killer, a termite buffet, and a magnet for fungi and carpenter ants. We grind stumps 4–8 inches below grade so you can sod over them, replant on top, or just stop seeing the reminder of the tree that used to be there — across Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Davidson, Fort Mill, and Tega Cay.

Our machines range from compact narrow-access grinders that fit through 36-inch gates to large self-propelled units for big-diameter oak and pine stumps. Whether it's one leftover stump in the backyard, a row of removed Leyland cypresses, or a full lot of stumps after clearing, we have the right equipment for the access and the size.

How we scope your project

Every property is different, so every quote is too. Here's the general path we take from first call to finished work — adjusted to fit the size, complexity, and goals of your specific project.

  1. 1. On-site measurement

We measure each stump's diameter at grade and assess access. Pricing is typically per inch of diameter, with a per-trip minimum for single small stumps.

  2. 2. Written quote

You get a flat written quote with the grind depth, whether chips are hauled off or left, and any topsoil/sod restoration called out separately.

  3. 3. Grind & chase roots

Stumps ground 4–8 inches below grade. Surface roots chased on request — useful when you're planning to sod or replant on top of the area.

  4. 4. Cleanup or restore

Chips are hauled off (most common for lawn restoration) or left as mulch (good for bed areas). Optional: backfill with topsoil and lay sod for an instant lawn finish.

Why Piedmont Landscape & Irrigation

  • Real grinding — 4 to 8 inches below grade, not just shaved flush with the dirt.
  • Tight-access machines that fit through 36-inch gates without removing fence sections.
  • Chip haul-off included as an option, not a surprise upcharge.
  • Topsoil and sod restoration available so you walk away with finished lawn, not a chip pit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Charlotte?+

Most residential stump grinding runs $4–$8 per inch of diameter measured at ground level, with a typical per-trip minimum of $150–$200 for a single small stump. Large oak and pine stumps over 30 inches in diameter are quoted individually.

How deep do you grind?+

Standard depth is 4–6 inches below grade — enough to plant grass over. We can grind 8+ inches deeper on request when you're planning to plant a new tree or shrub on top.

Do you haul off the chips?+

Yes, as an option. Most homeowners restoring lawn want the chips hauled off and the hole backfilled with topsoil. For bed areas, leaving the chips in place as mulch is fine — your call.

Can you get to a backyard stump behind a fence?+

Usually yes — we run narrow-access machines that fit through 36-inch gates. If access is tighter than that we'll let you know during the quote and explore options.
