Cost, longevity, repairability, and resale — a side-by-side comparison from a Charlotte hardscape contractor.
Building a backyard patio in Charlotte and torn between pavers and poured concrete? Both work, but they age very differently in our climate.
Cost up front
Concrete is cheaper to install — typically $8–$14 per sq ft. Pavers run $18–$28 per sq ft installed. On a 400 sq ft patio, that's a meaningful difference.
Cost over time
Concrete cracks. Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and clay subsoil mean most poured slabs show hairline cracks within 5–10 years and major cracks within 15. Pavers flex with the ground, and a cracked or settled paver can be lifted and reset individually.
Drainage
Pavers drain through the joints, which matters in a climate with heavy summer thunderstorms. Concrete needs proper slope or it pools.
Resale value
Realtors in the Charlotte metro consistently tell us paver patios add more perceived value than poured concrete of the same size.
Bottom line
If budget is the top priority, concrete is fine. If you want a patio that still looks great in 20 years, install pavers.
