Spring or fall? Bermuda or fescue? A practical timing guide for Charlotte-area homeowners installing new sod.
If you're planning new sod for your Charlotte home, timing matters almost as much as the variety you pick. Install at the wrong time of year and you'll be replacing dead patches by August. Get it right and your lawn roots in fast and looks finished within a few weeks.
Warm-season sod (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede)
Late April through early August is the sweet spot in the Charlotte metro. Soil temperatures are warm enough for fast root development, and you have plenty of growing season ahead before dormancy sets in. Avoid laying warm-season sod in October or November — it won't establish before the first frost.
Cool-season sod (Tall Fescue)
September through early November is ideal. Cooler nights and consistent rainfall mean fescue roots in quickly. Spring fescue installs (March–April) work but require diligent watering through the first hot stretch in June.
What about summer installs?
We install sod year-round, but July and August installs require an irrigation system and twice-daily watering for the first two weeks. If you don't have a working sprinkler system, wait for fall.
Bottom line for Charlotte homeowners
Bermuda and Zoysia: install May–July. Fescue: install September–October. Either way, proper soil prep — not just rolling sod over compacted clay — is what separates a lawn that thrives from one that limps along.
