Soil Prep & Grading in Charlotte, NC

Proper grading and soil amendment so plantings, sod, and beds actually thrive in Charlotte clay.

Service Overview

Soil Prep & Grading tailored to your property

Charlotte's red clay is the #1 reason new lawns and plantings fail. It compacts hard, drains poorly, and starves roots of oxygen. The fix isn't ignoring it — it's amending it properly with quality topsoil and compost, regrading for drainage away from the foundation, and prepping the surface so what you plant actually establishes.

We bring in screened topsoil and compost, till it into existing grade, fix slope problems, and leave you with a properly graded, amended surface ready for sod, seed, plantings, or pavers. Foundation drainage corrections, lot regrading after construction, and soft-spot repairs all handled.

Who it's for

Homeowners installing new sod or plants

Don't lay sod or plants over compacted clay — it's why so many installs fail. We prep the soil first so your investment actually establishes.

New construction with builder grade issues

Negative slope toward the foundation, soft spots, areas that pond after every rain — we fix builder-grade problems all over the Charlotte metro.

Properties with chronic wet or dry spots

Soggy patches that never dry, dead spots where nothing grows — usually a grade or soil composition problem we can correct.

How we scope your project

Every property is different, so every quote is too. Here's the general path we take from first call to finished work — adjusted to fit the size, complexity, and goals of your specific project.

  1. 1. Site evaluation

We walk the yard, identify slope, drainage, and soil composition issues, and lay out a plan for grading, fill, and amendment.

  2. 2. Material sourcing

Screened topsoil, compost, and fill brought in from quality Carolinas suppliers — not whatever fill dirt is cheapest that week.

  3. 3. Grading & tilling

We regrade with proper slope (minimum 5% away from the foundation for the first 10 feet), then till amendments into the top 4–6 inches.

  4. 4. Surface finish

Rake to a clean, even surface ready for sod, seed, or plantings. We coordinate with the next phase of the install seamlessly.

Why Piedmont Landscape & Irrigation

  • Quality screened topsoil — not the rocky construction fill some companies use.
  • Proper grade away from foundations to prevent water intrusion and crawlspace moisture.
  • Tilled to depth, not just spread on the surface — roots actually penetrate amended soil.
  • Coordinated with sod, planting, and drainage work so the full project flows in one schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Charlotte's red clay cause so many problems?+

It compacts under construction equipment and foot traffic, drains poorly because of fine particles, and locks roots out. Plants and sod laid directly on unamended clay struggle from day one. Proper amendment with compost and topsoil opens it up and dramatically improves results.

How much topsoil do I need?+

For sod prep, plan on 2–3 inches of quality topsoil tilled in. For new beds, 4–6 inches. We measure your areas and quote actual cubic yards needed — no guessing.

Can you fix a yard that ponds water after rain?+

Yes — usually a combination of regrading, soft-spot removal, and sometimes a French drain or swale. We diagnose the actual cause before quoting a fix.

Do you handle builder grade corrections?+

Frequently. New construction in Charlotte often has negative slope at the foundation, missed downspout extensions, and unsettled areas. We correct all of it as part of a finished landscape package.
